Waiver Wire 8/15

The August waiver claim period is among us, one deal has already been made; The Twins have sent Delmon Young to the Tigers for minor league pitcher Cole Nelson. Some people seem to be surprised by the Twins traded within their division, but Young was a non-tender candidate at the end of the year, so the Twins though they might as well trade him for something rather than non-tendering him and get nothing. Here are the players that have cleared waivers already:

  • Johnny Damon
  • Hideki Matsui
  • Ted Lily
  • Tom Gorzelanny
  • Chien-Ming Wang
  • Jason Vargas
  • Rodrigo Lopez
  • Bruce Chen
  • Carlos Zambrano
  • Alfonso Soriano
  • Carlos Lee
  • Bronson Arroyo
  • Chris Capuano
  • Angel Pagan
  • Wille Harris
  • D.J Carrasco
  • Jason Bay
Some players the Angels should target are:
  • Chris Capuano-Capuano has been decent all year pitching for the Mets, he can be used as a 5th starter or he could be put into the pen, and earns only $1.5MM plus incentives.
  • Bruce Chen-Same as above, only he pitches for the Royals.
  • Ted Lily-He always has strong strikeout-to-walk numbers, but he is a fly-ball pitcher and usually gives up homeruns. Yet Angel Stadium is a pitchers park, and they have a strong outfield defense so if the Angels could get the Dodgers to eat most of the contract (82% of his $33MM contract remaining [27MM+]) he could prove to be a valuable 5th starter in the rotation and provide veteran leadership in the clubhouse after Weaver/Haren/Santana all become free agents.
